Shoptalk to continue blog; suspend email distribution

For over 25 years, TG has published Shoptalk, its industry newsletter. It launched as a monthly print publication in 1990, went electronic — and weekly — in 2001, and converted to a blog with continued weekly distribution in 2001. Effective with this week's edition, Shoptalk will no longer issue the weekly digest version via email, but will continue to post articles to the blog to help you stay in tune with industry announcements, policy changes, and TG updates.

Reminder: Register for Preventing Unplanned Pregnancy and Completing College

There are many roadblocks that can keep a college student from crossing the graduation finish line — one such barrier is an unplanned pregnancy. A national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization has developed a program that schools can use to educate students on its effect. Attend an upcoming TG webinar to experience a demonstration of the program, entitled "Preventing Unplanned Pregnancy and Completing College."

TG promotes college enrollment and FAFSA completion with FAFSA 500 campaign

Raising college enrollment rates has been a long-time TG goal. This year, TG launched a special promotional campaign to get more students on the way to a degree or certificate.

Working with Amarillo College, Austin Community College, and the Austin Chamber of Commerce (through its Summer Melt Program), TG crafted a multi-pronged communication effort that reminds students that college this fall is still possible and help is available. Getting more students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is one of the campaign's major objectives. (The FAFSA is essential to receiving federal aid, without which many students could not attend college.)

TG issues first report on efficacy of federal student loan counseling; suggests revamp of design and policy changes

TG, in consultation with the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), has released the first of five reports on the efficacy of federal student loan counseling, "From Passive to Proactive: Understanding and Improving the Borrower Experience with Online Student Loan Exit Counseling." Drawing on student observations and interviews, TG's researchers suggest that a more engaging counseling experience for students would help promote responsible borrowing behavior and better prepare federal student loan borrowers for the repayment process.
