Parental Leave Deferment

Parental Leave Deferment — A deferment for borrowers who are pregnant, or caring for a newborn or newly adopted child.
Note: Federal PLUS loan borrowers are not eligible for the Parental Leave or Working Mother Deferments.
The maximum cumulative time frame that you may receive the Parental Leave Deferment is 6 months per occurrence.
If you apply for the Parental Leave Deferment, you must have an authorized school official certify your last date of attendance on at least a half-time basis within the six-month period preceding requested period of deferment.
Qualifications
You may qualify, if all of the following apply:
- You have an outstanding balance on at least one FFEL Program loan that was made before July 1, 1993.
- You are caring for your newborn child (a child less than six months old), or caring for your newly adopted child.
- You are not working full time or attending school during the deferment period.
- You have been enrolled in school at least half time within the six-month period preceding this deferment.
How to Apply
- Download the Parental Leave/Working Mother Deferment Request.
- Carefully read the entire form. Certain documentation may be required.
- Complete, print, and sign the deferment form. (To enter information into the interactive form, place your cursor in a field or tab from field to field. Turn interactive check boxes on and off by clicking on the box.) Mail it directly to your loan holder. Only your loan holder can approve your deferment request.
