Working Mother Deferment


"I am the mother of a preschool-age child and I am entering or re-entering the work force."

Working Mother Deferment — A deferment for borrowers who are mothers of preschool-age children and who are entering or re-entering the work force.

Note: Federal PLUS loan borrowers are not eligible for the Parental Leave or Working Mother Deferments.

The maximum cumulative time frame that you may receive the Working Mother Deferment is 12 months.

The Working Mother Deferment is based solely on information that you provide.


Qualifications

You may qualify, if all of the following apply:

  • You are a Federal Stafford or SLS loan borrower whose first FFEL Program loan was made on or after July 1, 1987, and before July 1, 1993.
  • You entered or re-entered the workforce within one year preceding this deferment request.
  • You are working full time in a position earning not more than $1 per hour above the federal minimum wage.
  • You are the mother of a preschool-age child who has not yet enrolled in the first grade or a higher grade in elementary school.

How to Apply

  1. Download the Parental Leave/Working Mother Deferment Request.
  2. Carefully read the entire form. Certain documentation may be required.
  3. Complete, print, and sign the deferment form. (To enter information into the interactive form, place your cursor in a field or tab from field to field. Turn interactive check boxes on and off by clicking on the box.) Mail it directly to your loan holder. Only your loan holder can approve your deferment request.
