"I am engaged in an internship/residency program."

Internship/Residency Program Deferment — The maximum cumulative time frame you may receive this deferment is 24 months. You must have an authorized internship/residency program official, or a state licensing official for internships required to begin professional practice or service, certify your dates of engagement in the program.

Certification by a state licensing official, if required, must be provided on a separate statement attached to the deferment request.


Qualifications

You may qualify, if all of the following apply:

  • You have an outstanding balance on at least one FFELP loan that was made before July 1, 1993; or, for PLUS loan borrowers, your first Federal PLUS loan was made before August 15, 1983.
  • You have been accepted into a medical or dental internship/residency program which is a supervised training program.
  • You hold at least a bachelor's degree before acceptance into the program.
  • Your program either leads to a degree or certificate from an institution of higher education, a hospital, or a health care facility that offers postgraduate training, or is required before you may be certified for professional practice or service.
  • Your program does not lead to a degree or certificate, but is required before you may be certified for professional practice or service. You must provide a separate statement from the appropriate state licensing agency certifying this requirement.


How to Apply

  1. Download the Education Related Deferment Request in English or Spanish.
  2. Carefully read the entire form. Certain documentation may be required.
  3. Complete, print, and sign the deferment form. (To enter information into the interactive form, place your cursor in a field or tab from field to field. Turn interactive check boxes on and off by clicking on the box.) Mail it directly to your loan holder. Only your loan holder can approve your deferment request.
