"I am on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States."

Armed Forces Deferment — A deferment for borrowers who are on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States.

The maximum cumulative time frame that you may receive this deferment is 3 years. This is a combined limit with Public Health Service and NOAA deferments. You or your representative must provide your loan holder with copies of your military identification and orders or have your commanding or personnel officer certify this deferment request.


Qualifications

You may qualify, if both of the following apply:

  • You have:
    • An outstanding balance on at least one FFELP loan that was made before July 1, 1993, or
    • You are a PLUS loan borrower and your first loan was made before August 15, 1983.
  • You are:
    • On active duty in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard, or
    • Enlisted in a reserve component of the Armed Forces or the National Guard while on active duty status in the Army or Air Force Reserves. You must be serving full time for a period expected to last at least one year, or you must be serving under an order for national mobilization.


How to Apply

  1. Download the Public Service Deferment Request in English or Spanish.
  2. Carefully read the entire form. Certain documentation may be required.
  3. Complete, print, and sign the deferment form. (To enter information into the interactive form, place your cursor in a field or tab from field to field. Turn interactive check boxes on and off by clicking on the box.) Mail it directly to your loan holder. Only your loan holder can approve your deferment request.
