Two-year colleges see largest gains in enrollment.
Enrollment in Texas institutions of higher learning has increased substantially in recent years. In Fall 1997, there were 934,511 students enrolled in Texas colleges and universities. By 2004, that number had grown to 1,181,231, an increase of almost a quarter of a million students.

As a percentage of total enrollment, Texas’ two-year institutions have grown the most. Two-year institutions, which represented 45.2 percent of enrollment in 1997, now represent over 48 percent of total enrollment.

When compared to 2000, Texas is predicted to have about 1 million more adults aged 18 to 24 — the traditional college-age population — by 2040. Fifty-nine percent of these potential college students will be Hispanic.

Increasingly, the future of Texas — including its economic prosperity as well as the expertise needed to run its business, government, and infrastructure — will depend on the education of its non-White populations, which historically have had lower incomes, higher rates of poverty, and less likelihood of attending and completing college than Whites.
