A deferment is a temporary postponement of a borrower's student loan repayment. A borrower is entitled to defer his or her student loan payments if the borrower meets certain eligibility criteria and requests a deferment. For more information on deferments and their eligibility criteria, visit TG Online's Introduction to Deferments.

A borrower must submit a deferment request directly to his or her lender. To apply for a deferment, a borrower should download the appropriate form, complete and sign it, and mail the form to his or her loan holder. * HRD Request — The Department of Education is currently working on updates to the HRD Request form based on the July 1, 2008 regulatory changes from the CCRAA along with the 2008 updated minimum wage and January 23, 2009 poverty guideline amounts. While the current HRD form (expiration date of 1/31/2009) should continue to be used, the NCHELP Program Operations Forms Subcommittee has developed a detailed information sheet to assist lenders and servicers with processing the HRD until a revised form is published. This HRD information sheet identifies the location of text on the current HRD form that is impacted by recent changes and includes the current text and the revised language. In addition, a chart listing the monthly amounts that represent 150 percent of the 2009 poverty guidelines for the applicable family size has been included as well as the definition for family size.
