TG board of directors elects new executive officers
Round Rock, Texas — The TG board of directors has elected a new slate of executive officers to serve for the 2007 fiscal year. Tommy Brooks, executive vice president and chief financial officer for Unity National Bank, has been named chair of the board. Dora Ann Verde, partner with the public accounting firm of Garza/Gonzalez & Associates, will serve as vice chair; and Yvonne Batts, president and owner of Batts Communications Inc., will serve as board secretary.
As chair of the board, Brooks will provide leadership for one of the nation's largest guarantors, helping to ensure access to higher education for more than 350,000 students and families each year. TG currently guarantees over $3 billion annually for student and parent borrowers through the Federal Family Education Loan Program. The company also assists students by providing information and guidance throughout the student's educational journey — from planning for college to successfully managing repayment of his or her student loans. He has served on the board since his appointment by Governor Rick Perry in 2002.
"Tommy's passion for ensuring access to higher education for the families and students of Texas is evident to all who work with him," said Sue McMillin, TG president and CEO. "We appreciate the vision and direction he provides, and we will look forward to working with him throughout his term as board chair."
A resident of Sugar Land, Chairman Brooks is a certified public accountant and certified financial planner and is involved in numerous civic and community organizations. Specifically, he serves on the board of the National Bankers Association, Joy Baptist Tabernacle, and is a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum-Houston Chapter. He recently served on the boards of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, Inner City Youth, Unity National Bank, the Banneker-McNair Academy charter school and Texas Southern University's Renewable Energy and Environmental Protection Academy.
Verde, who resides in San Antonio, was appointed to the TG Board in 2005 by Governor Rick Perry. Among her numerous civic and community involvements, Verde is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, the San Antonio Chapter of Certified Public Accountants, and the Government Finance Officers Association. She is also a member of the Mission City Business and Professional Women's Club, of which she is a past president. In addition to her professional associations, Verde is a board member of the Free Trade Alliance, a board member and treasurer for Texas Public Radio and ACCION Texas, and a member and past treasurer for San Antonio 100 and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Batts, an Abilene resident, was appointed by Governor Perry in 2005. She also serves her community actively through her work as a member of the board of directors for the Abilene Industrial Foundation, the Hendrick Medical Center Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Abilene, the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, and Goodwill Industries of West Texas.
