TG helps centralize college planning information

Round Rock, Texas — TG and other student loan guarantors across the country have developed a centralized source of information to help students and families plan for college. The consortium has launched two Web sites, www.going2college.org and www.prep4highered.org, that aim to increase awareness of the importance of higher education, the opportunities available, and the financial support offered.

The sites are a result of the College Access Initiative, included in the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005. Signed into law by President Bush in February 2006, the Act formalized the foundational role of guarantors in promoting access to postsecondary education. It also required guarantors to develop a comprehensive listing of the postsecondary education opportunities, programs, publications and other services available in their designated states. TG, as the designated guarantor for Texas, compiled the state-specific resources for the site and has made them available to the public.

"TG wholeheartedly supports any effort to make it easier to find information about college and how to plan for it — academically and financially," says Sue McMillin, TG president and CEO. "Student loan guarantors like TG have a public-service focus, and this initiative certainly aligns with our mission and the valuable role we play in providing information and ensuring access to higher education for students and families."

To locate college planning information on either of the sites, select the appropriate state of the student's residence or location of the college he or she plans to attend. Categories then appear with state-specific resources that can help students with the following activities:

  • career planning
  • planning for college
  • finding a college
  • paying for college

In preparing to launch the sites, the consortium also received support and technological assistance from Mapping-Your-Future.org, the National College Access Network, and the Pathways to College Network on this project.

TG and the other guarantor participants will maintain the information that pertains to their designated states and make updates as needed. For information about being included as a resource for college-bound students and families within a particular state or region, contact Richard Sapp, TG director of pre-college success, at (800) 252-9743, ext. 2865.
