Community, state education partners praise efforts at helping more students enroll and succeed in higher education

McAllen, TX — Community, business and state leaders were on-hand, today, to celebrate the efforts at helping more Rio Grande Valley-area students enroll and complete a college education. As part of the event, the McAllen Independent School District, the University of Texas at Brownsville, the University of Texas-Pan American, and the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development received grant awards that will help shape student success in higher education. The grants were awarded by TG, a public, non-profit corporation headquartered in Round Rock, Texas.

TG's Public Benefit Grant awards received by Dr. Maggie Hinojosa with UT-Pan American, Ethel Cantu with UT at Brownsville, Glenda McClendon with McAllen ISD, and Juan Ozuna with the Llano Grande Center for Research and Development.

TG awarded more than $885,000 to the Valley-area programs. The grant awards support efforts such as mentoring, instructional programming, college preparation, workshops, and community outreach.

"Working together, we are witnessing the positive impact that community programs and partnerships have toward student success, today," said Ivan Andarza, chair of TG's Board of Directors. "That means a positive impact for the community, region, state, and country in terms of a more educated workforce able to compete in a global economy."

"We are excited to have TG as a partner in the work that we do to raise college awareness and expectations in our community," said Llano Grande Center's Executive Director, Dr. Francisco Guajardo. "With TG's support, we are able to reach out to even more students and families to help them achieve their goal of higher education. TG continues to show great commitment toward supporting the college-going dreams of our students, and helping us to create positive change in our community."

"The University of Texas-Pan American is very excited to host one of the successful proposals funded by TG," said Richard Trevino, Jr., Executive Director for Student Support Services. "This grant will help provide direct services to assist low-income, Hispanic students enrolled in entry-level reading intensive courses, with the goal of improving postsecondary persistence."

"The TG Public Benefit grant will help develop the UTB Summer Bridge Program by funding the first two years of this new and innovative program," said Ethel Cantu, Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at Brownsville. "The program is designed to decrease the need for developmental education courses, as well as help transition students into college level courses."

TG awarded more than $6 million in competitive grants to 35 institutions and nonprofit organizations for the 2011-2012 award year. In awarding grant proposals, TG required recipients to use the funding to improve access to, or participation in, postsecondary education, and college retention. Grant funding was particularly targeted to help, either directly or indirectly, students from low- to moderate-income families. Priority also was given to proposals that addressed the needs of first-generation college students, and/or students who are underrepresented in higher education.

TG's Public Benefit Grant Program is administered based solely on merit and need, and without regard to the business of TG or any form of quid pro quo consideration.
