The funds will be used for the living stipends and related expenses for the mentors and volunteers involved in providing instruction, workshops, and guidance to students.

This project will augment the established after-school high school curriculum with intensive college to career exploration for more than 400 high school juniors and seniors with an increased emphasis on each student. In the summer before matriculation, a week-long summer bridge transition program will be provided for 50 students who do not have access to similar services through their chosen colleges. The program will focus on study skills, campus engagement, academic and personal advising, course and major selection, and the creation of individual road maps to baccalaureate degrees.

Investigators aim to examine the transfer pipeline and study institutional programs and practices that support transfer among low-income and first-generation students in order to identify promising practices that other institutions can adopt to increase success among this population.

This program seeks to continue funding for an after-school math enrichment program in which Kalamazoo College students tutor Kalamazoo Public School middle schoolers from minority groups typically underrepresented in higher education and math/sciences. The purpose of the program is to increase math achievement among talented middle school students at this crucial stage, where algebra is the "gatekeeper" to college. Changes to the program for second-year consideration include additional parent/guardian meetings and evaluation of causal connections between parent involvement and student success.

Project Title: National College Advising Corps Training Support

The Corps consists of 10 colleges committed to providing college access counseling through university-based programs throughout the nation. Each college employs recent graduate for a service year to work in underrepresented high schools to assist students with admission, financial aid, and scholarship applications. This project will support and augment these efforts by underwriting a six or seven-week intensive local training program and will provide the counselors with a veteran advisor to serve as a mentor throughout the academic year.

Project Title: College Connection: Making Dreams a Reality

This project takes the "College Connection" model started by Austin Community College, and implements it between Northeast Lakeview College and Judson ISD, aiming to increase the percentage of JISD seniors who enroll at NLC from 9 percent to 30 percent. Programming includes scholarship and financial aid workshops, a pre-college academic summer camp, and need-based scholarships for selected participants.

This project aims to provide three partnership groups with resources to implement access and retention programming and support services. In addition, support will be used to conduct an evaluation of these projects in order to disseminate findings to other access programs throughout Ohio and the U.S. The three partnership groups operate in Lima/Allen County, Washington State Community College, and Belmont Technical College. Overall, more than 7,000 students served by these three partnerships will benefit from program activities.

Targeted areas of impact include Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Central and South Texas.

This project aims to increase the number of Hispanic students entering the engineering and medical science fields through the expansion and improvement of the Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy and the Dual Enrollment Medical Science Academy. By participating in either academy, students can earn an associate degree at the same time they graduate from high school. Approximately 34 high schools in the Rio Grande Valley will participate, serving more than 230 students.

Parents will be provided with financial literacy information, including how to navigate the financial aid process, debt and credit management, and delinquency/default prevention.

This project would expand the "Abriendo Puertas" Parental Communication Initiative into the San Antonio region. The program provides a parental support system to assist Hispanic students in high school completion and college graduation. This program would be replicated in the Southwest ISD of San Antonio, including collaboration between school administrators, city officials, and community organizations to provide tools and training to 25 parent volunteers, who in turn provide outreach to 500 SISD parents.

Project Title: Post-Baccalaureate Program

This project is a year-long dental-school preparation program for applicants who are from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in dental school enrollment and who show good academic potential but were not admitted. During the year, 16 students take a total of 30 hours over two semesters. The majority of these courses are upper-division science courses. Following completion, students participate in a six-week pre-matriculation program that offers an overview of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, neuroscience, and histology — courses that first-year dental students typically find challenging. Each student will meet with a mentor to assess progress and further develop organizational and time-management skills to help ensure success.

Students who participate in this program will work collaboratively with TAMUK and their high school's college awareness center (Go Center) by serving on the G-Force and developing and implementing monthly programs that promote college readiness to help educate the entire student body on the importance of higher education. In addition, TAMUK and TG funding would be used to provide 29 scholarships for $4000 (disbursed over two years) to students who have met program requirements, demonstrated a strong desire to create a college-going culture on their campus, and who plan to enroll at TAMUK. This project reflects partnership between TAMUK, TAMUCC, THECB, and 25 school districts in South Texas.

Project Title: Black Male Youth Accessing Higher Education with E's

This project will provide direct services to 50 students and families selected from 2,513 prospective participants, age 16-19. The cohort is pre-collegiate, high-risk, economically disadvantaged, potentially first-generation college-going, African American males (and parents/guardians) currently living in Dallas Housing Authority's Section 8 and Public Housing. The program will provide exercises and workshops, including college visits, financial aid information, and college preparation information, to expose participants to the reality and accessibility of higher education.

The potential of the study is to (1) provide data about the perceived impact on college readiness of programs already in place that are sponsored by members of the North Texas Regional P-16 Council, (2) to inform school communities about key elements of developing a college-going culture, and (3) to involve students, teachers, and counselors in thinking about school improvement by drawing on research and best practices.

This proposal requests funds to provide high school-specific reports to districts in Region I (Rio Grande Valley) that contain college-going information to all Texas public colleges and 94 percent of out-of-state and private colleges nationwide for their graduates. Between 30 and 35 UTEP freshman students, who are also Upward Bound alumni, will work with 10 sophomore or junior-level mentors to improve success rates in completing the freshman year. Goals of the program include successful completion and testing out of developmental education courses, completing 24 credit hours with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and completion of career aptitude assessments, and academic advising.

This program has two components: 1) a college-level course titled "Current topics in science: a global perspective," taught primarily during the summer preceding students' senior year of high school and 2) a mentoring program to assist these students with the college application process and support them through their first year at a college or university. Students will earn up to 2 college credits and will receive a $500 stipend upon successful completion of the program. Targeted students will be first-generation students from high schools with low college-going rates.

As a result, this project will focus on services and programming connected with residence halls and housing staff to address student success.
