Legislative Resources

This page contains resources that you can access to help you keep up with changes in the Higher Education Act (HEA), and to monitor financial aid-related legislation that has been introduced in the U.S. House or Senate. Also provided is each house's Web site, by which you can search for your congressional representatives.

  • THOMAS, legislative information from the Library of Congress
    The THOMAS Web site makes federal legislative information freely available to the general public. On this site, you can search for, check the status of, and read the text of bills that are currently under consideration in either house of Congress.

  • U.S. House of Representatives
    The House Web site contains information on, among other things, the current House schedule, upcoming committee hearings, House committees, and House rules. You can also enter your zip code (+4) on the Web site's home page to look up your U.S. House Representative.

  • House Committee on Education and Labor
    This House committee has jurisdiction over the areas of education (elementary, secondary, and postsecondary) and workforce programs. The Education and Labor Committee is chaired by Representative George Miller (D-Calif.). The subcommittee that oversees higher education issues is the Higher Education, Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness Subcommittee, which is chaired by Representative Rubén Hinojosa (D-Texas).

    The Senate Web site contains information on, among other things, the current Senate schedule, upcoming committee hearings, Senate committees, and Senate rules, You can also search for your U.S. Senators by state on the Web site's home page.

  • Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP)
    This Senate committee has jurisdiction over a wide range of areas including, but not limited to, public health, education (elementary, secondary, and postsecondary), labor standards and statistics, and private pension plans. The HELP Committee is chaired by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.). The subcommittee that oversees higher education issues is the Subcommittee on Children and Families, which is chaired by Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.).

  • The Congressional Budget Office (CBO)
    The CBO's purpose is to provide the Congress with objective, nonpartisan, and timely analyses to aid in economic and budgetary decisions on the wide array of programs covered by the federal budget. It also provides information and estimates required for the Congressional budget process.

    The CRS's purpose is to work exclusively for the U.S. Congress, providing policy and legal analysis to committees and Members of both the House and Senate, regardless of party affiliation.

  • The Office of Management and Budget (OMB)
    The OMB assists the president in overseeing the preparation of the federal budget and in supervising its administration in federal agencies. The OMB also oversees and coordinates the federal administration's procurement, financial management, information, and regulatory policies.

    The White House Web site outlines the president's agenda, provides information on the executive branch, and highlights recently signed federal legislation.
