This, That, and the Other...

Curious about what dorm rooms of the future may look like? Modular will be key: rooms that can be stacked to create a building; furniture that can be easily switched out to suit need; even room decorations which can be replaced according to the taste of students. These are all components of dorm rooms of tomorrow, at least according to the winning design submitted to a contest held by the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International. In an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the winning designers — an architectural firm located in Boston — said that low-cost and a stress on using space economically were two of their guiding principles. The designs of other entrants featured moveable walls to make rooms open or private, as needed.
