Q.: Is there a quick resource for what documents students and parents need in order to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?

A.: Yes, ED provides a list of documents needed at www.fafsa.ed.gov/before003.htm. For the 2009-10 school year, students will need their financial information from 2008, including:

  • Social Security Number or alien registration or permanent resident card (if not a U.S. citizen)
  • Driver's license (if any)
  • 2008 W-2 Forms and other records of money earned
  • 2008 Federal Income Tax Return: IRS 1040, 1040A, 1040 EZ, or Foreign Tax Return, or Tax Return for Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Federal States of Micronesia, or Palau (and student's spouse's, if married)
  • Parents' 2008 Federal Income Tax Return (if a dependent student)
  • 2008 untaxed income records
  • Veterans benefits records
  • Child support received
  • Worker's compensation
  • Current bank statements
  • Current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stock, bond, and other investment records
