Ask the Policy Expert

Q.: What is the Red Flags Rule, and where can a school find guidance on it?

A.: According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the "Red Flags Rule requires many businesses and organizations to implement a written Identity Theft Prevention Program designed to detect the warning signs — or 'red flags' — of identity theft in their day-to-day operations." The FTC's resource, located at www.ftc.gov/redflagsrule, includes the FTC's guide, frequently asked questions, and other resources.
