Enrollment has been rising at community colleges for many years, but the recent recession has sent 2-year college enrollment figures surging. According to the Pew Research Center, more than 11 percent of all young adults ages 18 to 24 were enrolled in a 2-year college in October 2008. The increase has left some community colleges scrambling to find enough class space, let alone accommodate parking and dorm needs. Some colleges have started offering classes almost around the clock. Bunker Hill Community College in Boston offers English and psychology classes from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Clackamas Community College in Oregon offers welding classes during a similar time period. Find out more about how community colleges are managing recession-era challenges. |
