Visiting the campus computer lab — and praying for a vacant workstation — is a weekly, if not daily, ritual for many students. More colleges are saving students the time of making the trip and the cost of buying any software required for particular classes by "virtualizing" their computer labs. These schools are placing access to their computer lab software and hardware on the Web. Students can then log in remotely and begin using applications like Microsoft Word® without even having the software on their desktops or laptops.
