According to census projections, by 2050 nearly half the U.S. population will be non-white. Colleges and universities are focusing more resources on outreach to non-white communities, and many are interested in recruiting first-generation students and students from low-income backgrounds. An article in Academic Impressions lays out a four-point strategy for enrolling and promoting retention rates among these students. According to the article, administrators should educate their faculty on the challenges that first-gen students face; form a faculty liaison group; partner with local high schools in outreach efforts; and get the buy-in of first-gen parents by educating them on the college experience. |
